After not writing for ages, a little meme brings me back for a spell. Thanks for the thought, setsuled.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 56.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
<strike>6. Tag five other people to do the same.</strike>

I'll admit, I opted for Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse over the unabridged Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary that is nearby. Picking the closest book is a bit difficult when there are literally thousands stacked, boxed, or perpetually drifting around me. Anyway, in this passage Bertram Wooster is referring to a centerpiece he spies at his host's dinner table:

In any normal house it would have been a bowl of flowers or something on that order, but this being Totleigh Towers it was a small black figure carved of some material I couldn't put a name to. It was so gosh-awful in every respect that I presumed it must be something he had collected recently. My Uncle Tom is always coming back from sales with similar eyesores.

"That's new, isn't it?" I said, and he started violently. I suppose he'd just managed to persuade himself that I was merely a mirage and had been brought up with a round turn on discovering that I was there in the flesh.

"That thing in the middle of the table that looks like the end man in a minstrel show. It's something you got since . . . er . . . since I was here last, isn't it?"

Tactless of me, I suppose, to remind him of that previous visit of mine, and I oughtn't to have brought it up, but these things slip out.

To view the first episode of Jeeves and Wooster, just follow this handy YouTube playlist. There's also a preview for those who do not wish to open new windows:

<lj-embed id="15" />

So. I should have written all sorts of things by now. I'm no longer in the Falls, and I'd honestly rather not talk about any of it. The mucus monster resides in my chest and nasal passages, making anything and everything nearly impossible. However, I must post this news;

Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) will return to Torchwood for a third season mini-series of five episodes on BBC1. Filming starts in August. (Information found on Wired.com here.)

This may be old news. Keep in mind that I didn't have internet access for quite a while.

P.S. Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei is an amazing anime. Thank you setsuled for the recommendation.
Withdrawing from most everything brought silence in my life, including here.

As usual, much has happened and most of it isn't what you'd generally call good. Al broke up with me. Twice. He fucked a mutual friend behind my back. I gave him another chance. It didn't work out, and I didn't go back. Some newfound friends let me sleep on their futon until I managed to move into a loft with a guy I went to high school with. We were both in situations that required a quick move, so it was mutually beneficial. Now I'm back in the town we went to school in. It wouldn't be so bad if there was any sort of public transportation. My job search is limited to walking distance.

That wasn't so bad. Nice and neat. A tidy mess bound by letters. Perhaps I'm too tired to notice the holes.

Justin and I are going to see <strike>Radiohead</strike> The Cure* tomorrow evening. This shall definitely be something I'll never forget.

*Apparently I could forget which show I was going to, though. I'll be seeing Radiohead later. It's still rather surreal to think that I saw/will see either of them.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Are your cohorts looking at you quizzically, wondering why you seem so energized from exploring the shadowy, off-limits places? I'll offer some suggestions about what you could say to them. First, try to make them see that until you've risked going too far, you may not know when to stop. Second, tell them that you suspect there are healthy desires buried at the roots of your dark feelings, and you're hoping to free them. Third, explain to them that you're not picking at your scabs in order to prolong your hurt, but rather to better understand the hurt. If those rationales are too subtle for your companions to understand, cackle softly and say that you just need to be a little bad in order to give your goodness more soul.

Horseheadedfleshwizard

Hose down the dead
Before they die, before they die
Hose down the dead
Before they die, before they die
Do you hear a dying fire, a dying fire
Oh, can you feel a golden soul

I put the ovaries in my mouth
And all the dogs won't die
And the devil will call the cats home
And he looks up to the sky
I put the ovaries in my mouth
And all the dogs won't die
And the devil will call the cats home
And he looks up to the sky

Hose down the dead
Before they die, before they die
Hose down the dead
Before they die, before they die

- Devendra Banhart

You have not been here before, so don't make assumptions based upon past experiences.

Saturday night, Justin and I attended a costume party. It was surprisingly fun. I dressed as a goth faery and Justin was Hunter's lawyer in Fear and Loathing. We only had a day to get our costumes together, as he was invited at the last minute by a co-worker/friend, but it didn't matter. Everyone was very nice and excellent to observe after drinking a few cups of punch. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera. I had to bring my costume and such to work in order to be ready for the party on time, so it was inevitable that I'd forget something.

I've come to develop rather pleasant social skills.
Rage Against the Machine; the Battle of Alpine Valley

Last Friday, Justin and I drove through clogged highways and miles of wet pavement to see Rage Against the Machine at Alpine Valley. It was the first time I'd ever been to the venue or to such a massive concert. But the enduring factor was all of the mud. The parking lots (which were just wide stretches of grass) were soggy from three days of heavy rain, and the "grass seats" were no better. People began turning the hillside into a mud slide, while also grabbing handfuls of it to throw at those who had regular seats down below. Justin and I were lucky enough to get first row seats to the right of the stage, and were out of range of the mud slinging.

Before Rage even hit the stage, the security guard in front of us informed us of a man having falling from the upper section to the lower, landing on his head and coming out of it paralyzed. Then the crowd removed the bars separating the two sections, ripping them right out of the concrete. It was chaos, but I suffered only drunken shoves and beer spills, as well as the unavoidable mud being transferred from one soaked person to the next.

Once the show really began, that was all forgotten. The crowd flooded forward, ignoring the futile seating arrangements to jump the bars between the seats and the pit directly in front of the stage, or just to get closer in general. You'd have thought they were breaking out of prison the way they ran toward the stage, crawling over one another to reach their destination. Luckily hands were always there to catch those who would have otherwise landed on concrete, and all of the smaller people (like myself) were well protected by larger ones. Though I must admit to defending myself rather well when it came to the odd drunken intruder.

The concert itself was loaded with energy. Hundreds of people were jumping to the same beat, shouting, punching the air, and stomping/clapping after each song. The band was dripping sweat, but it didn't stop them from leaping about the stage like madmen. I loved it. I loved the music, the amazing guitar solos, and the communal raising of energy, finally released in words and music and dance. It's an experience I don't think I'll ever forget.

Of course, getting out of the parking lot was the most difficult part of the journey. Unless you had a 4X4, you were stuck. I pushed quite a few cars up toward the main path, which allowed us to move forward a bit more. I even pushed our van with the help of some guys who saw me struggling to get it rocking back and forth. Justin helped move the line much more than I did, being considerably stronger and better dressed for it. In the end, we spent 3-4 hours just getting out of the parking lot. During that time we listened to Portishead, VNV Nation, Bob Dylan, and many others while scarfing down our stash of subs and Mountain Dew. Fortunately, Justin knew to be prepared for some sort of delay.

Killing in the Name:
(If you don't want to watch the whole thing, at least watch the last third.)

<lj-embed id="10" />

Bulls on Parade (Part 1);
<lj-embed id="11" />

Leaving the parking lot (this is actually the lot that we were in).
<lj-embed id="12" />

Tossing and turning is not appreciated when one has to wake up at four in the morning. Entirely understandable. He suggested I drink some water to clear out the Mountain Dew and go online for a bit.

So here's a meme, swiped from setsuled

What are you reading right now?
The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany, Bad Brains by Kathe Koja, and The Temple of Shamanic Witchcraft by Christopher Penczak.

Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that?
It depends on what I feel like reading, but I did recently purchase a book on the basic works of Jung and The Cipher, by Kathe Koja. Oddly enough, I also picked up The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (setsuled is currently reading it).

What’s the worst thing you were ever forced to read?
Probably Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?
It really depends on the person, but I often lend people my copies of Wraeththu by Storm Constantine, Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, and Silk by Caitlín R. Kiernan.

Admit it, the librarians at your library know you on a first name basis, don’t they?
No, I haven't been to the local library since I moved here. It's not exactly in the best neighborhood, nor is it very clean in appearance. I prefer to haunt used book stores or muddle through my own library (which is mostly mixed in with my mom's books in her attic).

Do you read books while you eat? While you bathe? While you watch movies or TV? While you listen to music? While you’re on the computer? While you’re having sex? While you’re driving?
I used to always read while eating, though my father reprimanded me for it constantly. I only read books if a bad movie was on and I wasn't allowed to hide out in my room (as this was considered "family time"). On the bus I have to listen to music while reading, otherwise the sheer noisiness of the people becomes too distracting. Zen meditation music works very well. I read short stories and such on the computer, but never full novels as it hurts my eyes. The only reason I could see anyone reading a book while having sex is if they need a guide, which I surely don't. I don't drive.

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn’t put it down?
Hm... it's been a while. I'd have to say it was probably Kushiel's Justice by Jacqueline Carey.

[Postscript: My download of the second season of Dr. Who just finished! I am saved!]

It's been so long since I wrote a proper entry that I feel obligated to enter something. If only I weren't half dead by the time I drag myself to the computer every day. That and spending hours upon hours trying to set my iPod straight (it wouldn't upload a single song) have made the idea of writing anything coherent unusually daunting. The iPod can upload approximately 15 songs at a time now. It will have to do.

So tonight I give you a meme stolen from multiple friend's journals;

1. Height?: On the rare occasion that I'm standing up straight, it's 5'9".

2. Have you ever smoked heroin?: No. And I don't ever want to.

3. Do you own a gun?: Only blades for me.

5. Do you get nervous before "meeting the parents": It's called an anxiety disorder. Clonazepam helps.

6. What do you think of hot dogs?: Nasty little things that are sold on street corners like dirty whores.

7. What's your favorite Christmas carol?: None. I despise Christmas carols.

8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning?: Mountain Dew, though I sometimes indulge in orange juice or coffee.

10. Is your bathroom clean?: As clean as a closet-sized bathroom can be.

11. What's your favorite piece of jewelry?: I really love my silver cartouche. It was a gift from Brynne for my birthday years ago, and was made in Egypt.

12. Do you like painkillers?: I take them only when absolutely necessary. They tend to make me sick or make my heart beat so fast I start to think I'm dying.

13. Superstitious?: I prefer to think of it as "obsessive compulsive". <-- Agreed.

14. Do you have A.D.D.?: I hate this question.

15. Middle Name?: Starr. Yes, with two r's.

16. 16 isn't superstitious???: If you say so.

17. Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment:
1. It's muggy in here.
2. I should be in bed.
3. I hate having to go to the laundromat.

18. Name the last 3 things you have bought recently: Fixin's for dinner, a $10 area rug (in hopes of quieting down the creaky floor boards in my room), and Mountain Dew.

19. Name 3 drinks you regularly drink. Mountain dew, coffee, orange juice.

22. Current worry?: Having the thread break.

23. Current dislike?: Shitty, unpredictable Wisconsin weather.

24. Favorite place to be?: Anywhere I can hide away (usually here, in my computer/book room).

25. Least favorite place to be?: Depending on the day, the bus or work.

26. Do you miss anyone?: My brother.

27. Do you own slippers?: I used to have a pair of unicorn slippers, but the cats always attacked them.

28. What shirt are you wearing?: A white t-shirt that says "CHASiN' PU**Y iN WiSCONSiN" with what looks to be a child's drawing of a cat.

29. Do you burn or tan?: Turn red, then a soft brownish white. Like antique lace, you could say.

30. Favorite color(s)? Grey, black, and green/tan earthy mixes (the latter being a recent discovery).

31. Would you be a pirate?: I'd be a Robin Hood pirate that saved sea life.

32. Shower singing?: Whenever I'm alone and can turn up Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Bjork, etc.

34. What did you fear was going to get you at night as a child?: Robbers and the ghost of my great grandfather (he built our house and died in the room that was mine at the time).

35. What's in your pockets right now? No pockets, just underwear.

36. List one thing that makes you laugh?: Myself.

37. Best bed sheets as a child?: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

38. Worst injury you've ever had?: Does a UTI count as an injury? That was definitely the most painful next to my fractured foot/ankle experiences.

39. Favorite song(s)?: No favorites, just the many that I love.

40. How many TVs do you have in your house?: One crappy one.

41. Who is your loudest friend?: I don't really have loud friends.

42. Who is your most silent friend?: Depends on the day.

43. Does someone have a crush on you?: Not that I know of.

44. Do you wish on shooting stars?: I have before.

45. What is your favorite book?: Much like songs, there are too many to choose from for many different reasons.

46. What's your Favorite candy?: I never really liked candy. No sweet tooth, I guess.

47. What song do/did you want played at your wedding?: No idea. I don't want to get married. It is officially a bad idea for at least the next 8 years.

48. What song do you want played at your funeral?: People don't really have songs played at their funerals anymore. Just the usual funereal noise that reminds me too much of church and elevators. Um... yeah, I have no clue.

49. What were you doing 12 AM last night?: Still fixing my damn iPod.

50. What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up?: Too late to get the laundry done before work.

Oh, and I recommend Six String Samurai to anyone looking for a good movie that's not in theaters. Brilliant post-apocalyptic silliness that I adore.

Here be the trailer;

<lj-embed id="9" />

Just got back from seeing Sunshine with Justin. There were only two other people in the theater. I'm extremely grateful for that, as it was an amazing movie, and having to deal with idiots would have been a shame.

This movie did everything right. The characters, the plot, even the camera work were all precisely as they needed to be. It wasn't forced, which allowed the suspension of disbelief to really bring the movie to life. Too many sci-fi movies that take place on "ships" become boring or annoying, as they tend to rely on inane drama to keep it interesting. I was worried that it would be the same in this film, but it proved otherwise. As Justin said, it crossed multiple genres, having sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and a very human/realistic aspect. I'm really glad that I was able to see it on a big screen and would definitely pay to see it again (though technically Justin paid for my ticket).

I often wonder about the very question this movie asks; when should we, as humans, let Nature take its course? Do we alter our fates by trying to save our dying Sun, or do we let it happen as we know it inevitably will? It applies to much smaller circumstances here on Earth, but those circumstances have been easily ignored or dealt with only as much as is necessary to keep our way of life going. What about when it's something so big that we can't ignore it? By then, I imagine that we'll have mined the Earth of almost all it can offer, destroying ourselves before the Sun ever gets the chance, but no one can know that for certain. Which is why such questions are so stimulating - there are so many possibilities, and so many answers.

It would be easy to ramble on about this, theorizing and hypothesizing, but it's getting rather late and my mind is clouded.

I finally resized and uploaded all the pictures I have from the Renaissance Faire, the visit with Jade, and the night I got drunk and hung out with Jessica. Normally this would not matter much, but the sweaty humid heat is not to be mocked with clothes that already stink.
